The Power of Persistence

My grandmother grew up very poor. Every day she had to walk over 8 kilometers to school with no shoes on her bare feet. When it was cold and there was frost on the ground, she would rub her feet to keep them warm. Even though life was extremely difficult when she was young, she never gave up on her dream of being a nurse. She persevered and fought against everything that was thrown at her until her dream came true.

My grandmother’s story shows the power of persistence pays out. If she could create the life she wanted even after struggling so much as a child, I think that means we too can have the life we want if we try hard enough and persist.

Elon Musk’s Determination at SpaceX

Look at Elon Musk and his rocket company SpaceX. In September 2008, SpaceX tried to launch a rocket for the third time from an island called Kwajalein Atoll. But the launch failed badly. Everyone felt defeated after missing family events and not sleeping to work on a project that had failed spectacularly in front of the world. In that low moment when everyone in the company was down, in that moment when others may have given up, Musk said “I will never give up. I’ll keep going until I succeed.”

Three years later on December 8, 2011, SpaceX made history by becoming the first private company to launch a spacecraft into orbit, around the Earth, and bring it back safely. Today, SpaceX launches rockets regularly, they are making going to space seem as normal as moving a train from one city to another city. This incredible achievement was only possible because Elon refused to give up. He believed that their persistence would make them win one day.

Overcoming Fears and Limiting Beliefs

However, what’s funny is that too often, we _limit_ ourselves by being afraid to try something new or difficult. We get scared of what others might think of us. We get too scared of what they might say if we fail. It’s crazy really that some of us are more afraid of what other people think of us than we are afraid of wasting our lives doing things that add no meaning to our lives

We need to ignore those fears that hold us back. We need to believe in the potential that lies within us. We are capable of doing so many great things. Think about the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, who didn’t listen when many people said humans could never fly. On the 17th of December 1903, they defied the doubters when they were the first people to fly an airplane for 12 seconds in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

For today’s generation, airplanes in the sky are totally normal. But just over 100 years ago, the idea of humans traveling in the clouds seemed crazy to most people, it was unheard of.

The Wright brothers showed that even our biggest dreams are possible if we have the bravery to step outside our comfort zone and keep trying new solutions until one works.

So, In Conclusion….

All these stories, my grandmother’s _journey_ to become a nurse, Elon Musk’s journey to make SpaceX the giant that it is now, and the Wright brothers’ pioneering aviation breakthrough, are great examples of the power of persistence. They prove that no obstacle is too large and no vision too ambitious. All we need to do is persist, maintain our faith, and absolutely refuse to give up.
